Pacific Beach San Diego

What makes Pacific Beach San Diego such a Crowd-puller?

Pacific Beach San Diego, locally and popularly shortened to its acronym P.B, is one of the busiest beach towns on the West Coast. It draws its name from the stretch of beach which is located south of Crystal Pier and extends from Mission Bay to La Jolla.

The Ocean Boulevard is a seemingly endless walkway running along the length of the beach meant for pedestrians. The side of the “boulevard” is dotted with shops, bars and restaurants. A primarily young crowd made up of skateboarders, rollerbladers, cyclists, shoppers and sunbathers throng the area.Quite unique to Pacific Beach San Diego, the streets are named in a rather quirky fashion. They had been renamed many times before settling down to the present designations in 1900. The streets running north to south received their names from federal officials hailing from the 19th century. The names follow in alphabetical order like Bayard, Cass, Dawes, Everts, Fanuel, Gresham, Haines, so on and so forth. The east-west streets were named after precious stones (barring a few exceptions), namely Turquoise, Sapphire, Opal, Beryl, Diamond, Emerald, Felspar, Garnet etc.

Despite there being parking zones, car parking can become a real headache around the Pacific Beach San Diego area. Thus the advocated means of transport have, of necessity, become quite typical to the area. Cars are best avoided. Cruiser bicycles (or Beach cruisers as they are called) are considered the safest and best option. Skateboards, roller skates and even Segway transporters can be made use of. All the implements can be had for hire from local rental shops.

The beach is the strongest crowd puller mostly used for sunbathing and partying purposes. Swimming is the other choice occupation. However families tend to prefer the northern part of Pacific Beach stretching from Tourmaline to Crystal Pier. It is quieter, supervised by lifeguard towers, and with public restroom at hand. The ocean alongside Pacific Beach is not ideal for surfing. Surfers thus tend to congregate at the Tourmaline Surfing Park where the surfing-only beach is rewarded by slopey waves. It is a popular spot among locals. The Mission Bay Park, sitting south of Pacific Beach San Diego, is a family hot spot. It is good for holding picnics, fishing and varied water sports.

SeaWorld is a must-see venue. First opened in San Diego, it is an animal-themed ocean park which takes children and adults alike on a wondrous journey. The various rides like Journey to Atlantis, Wild Arctic and Shipwreck Rapids and the awesome animal exhibits like walruses and beluga whales and polar bears compete for attention. For the Pacific Beach San Diego crowd, second only to the beach is the attraction of its vibrant nightlife. The place has more bars and eateries than you could possibly imagine. Mexican joints are by far the most popular choice. As for bars, the bulk of them are clustered on Garnet Avenue which is “the” most happening place in Pacific Beach. With relaxed dress codes and a single, youthful crowd, they generate record footfall, specially around weekends.
